As a young man, Fleming trained with the London Scottish regiment in his spare time#During the First World War, Fleming served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. The sight of many fatal cases of wound infection sparked off his interest in finding ways of fighting such problems#Fleming always related his accidental discovery to the importance of scientists being able to pursue their research free from commercial or bureaucratic pressures#Fleming was a keen amateur painter and many of his friends were artists#Fleming was not the first to notice the effects of antibacterial effect of mould. In 1897 a French scientist named Duchesne had remarked upon it, but failed to follow through the implications.
